Today’s fearless female is Becky! She is always willing to try something new and embraces every challenge with gusto.
Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?
Skuter or Beek! Skuter is my last name and Beaky Beck as I have a tendency to be cheeky! So combined it became BEEK!<
What do you love most about your sport?
I love challenging myself physically and mentally to see what I am truly capable of. I like to feel free and limitless when I’m trail running I feel like I’m in different world altogether. The feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment once I have completed a race is one of the best feelings In the world. I almost feel invisible and can’t wait to see how farther, harder and faster I can go next time!
Where did you start? What was your beginning?
I was raised to be athletic by my father who was also into extreme sports. hang-gliding, para-gliding, deep sea diving and orienteering. He was also always going jogging and doing push ups every chance he got lol. My first 5 km race was with him and my sister in Grade 2. From there I was a runner and athlete in every sport you could imagine. Then got into boxing, kickboxing and MMA. Once my body couldn’t take those beatings anymore I shifted into the ultra trail running and I think this is where I will keep my focus for a while!
How do you ensure you are at your strongest on race day?
I am western riding coach so I ride and race horses a lot which keeps me in good shape. I also still box, kickbox. jog, hike, bike, snowshoe… you name it!! The key is to stay active always!
What's on your playlist?
I never listen to music when I’m running or working out. I prefer to hear and embrace my surroundings! When indoors I usually just put an inspirational movie on!
What's your fave piece of tech or gear?
My Garmin hands down
What motivates you? What is your 'why'?
Race day and the excitement I will feel. Knowing I’ll have a strong sense of accomplishment and happiness at the end of the race. Feeling like if I can push through tough training days then I can can push through anything.
How do you deal with race jitters?
Go to the bathroom a few times lol, then almost turn it into a focus and an angry determination.
What is your favourite thing to do after a race?
Have a Ceasar or beer with friends!
What one word describes you? What word motivates you?
What are you most proud of?
The Canadian Death Race and my time.
What challenges do you struggle the most with?
Being too hard on myself, pushing too hard, not allowing my body rest until I am forced. Anxiety around the thought that I can’t complete a race.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their athletic journey?
I would say, just never give up or doubt what you’re capable of doing. Don’t put limits on what you think you can do. Leave “I can’t” in the past. This is your journey and you’re about to redefine yourself and push new limits. Remember to love yourself and give yourself credit for all your successes along the way. You can do it and you WILL do it!
You are one kick ass woman Becky! Thanks for sharing your journey!
